Randy grew up in Tucson, Arizona and began playing drums at the age of 6, starting out playing on magazines set up on a table to look like a drum set. Throughout middle and high school, he took up other instruments including guitar, clarinet, and piano - all of which reinforced his overall musical sensibilities, but his focus on drums and percussion took hold early. His first professional drumming gig happened at age 11 - answering an add to play drum set in the pit band for a community theater production, and by age 15, he had an opportunity to be a featured guest percussion soloist with the Tucson Symphony thanks to a recommendation from his teacher at the time. Early professional experiences included club work with cover bands, smaller jazz groups and big bands. He also worked in various classical settings including opera, ballet orchestra, and musical theater.
Living in southern CA since the early 80’s, Randy has had the good fortune to perform with a range of outstanding musicians throughout San Diego, L.A. and Orange County. Over the years he has enjoyed collaborations with countless groups of all sizes and styles. Randy is experienced in a range of musical styles including jazz, pop, classic rock, funk, R & B, and country, and as a player, Randy’s focus is always in service of the music, providing the right combination of energy, balance, and space for other players to tell their story.
Randy is passionate about drumming and enjoys sharing practical tips for real-world drumming excellence. His students benefit from his experience as well as his ability to communicate clearly and effectively with people of all ages and abilities. His focus is to listen to his students and form a structured and enjoyable path toward their success in whatever musical styles or situations they may encounter.
